Sayonara, College of Media

“Over the next several months, ad hoc campus committees will take a critical look at numerous University programs and units with a focus on the impact of cost reduction strategies, revenue enhancements, and potential unit reorganization and reorientation,” said the e-mail from the College of Media.

And for those of you who know my rampant paranoia, the interim provost and interim vice chancellor have already discussed this as a viable option. So no, it’s not just me.

Don’t get me wrong, I have my qualms with the journalism program here. The faculty mainly consists of egomaniacs. Students are forced to take J200 and J400, even though you could easily combine the two. And there’s no emphasis on Web skills or social media, but I mean who really needs the Internet anyway? (Please note, that’s sarcasm).

But will getting rid of the college help these problems? Nope, not a bit. If anything this should be a wake-up call to the faculty that they need to get their shit together and plan a new and sustainable course for the program.

Not to mention the University is now sending the message that when times are tough, media can be easily cut. That’s a great reflection on the degree I’ve already earned and the second degree I’m currently pursuing. I’m sure Mizzou and Indiana will love it too.

If this concerns you or pisses you off, the least you can do is contribute to this poor excuse of a forum they’ve created.
